Technical Suggestions From Your Chief Court Administrator

Some "Musts":  If you are using the Excel Spreadsheet (highly recommended by Your Chief Court Administrator), you must have version 2003 or later.  If you want the most current version, Office 2007 should be out soon.  You MUST enable your macros by setting security levels to medium or below.  Some viruses run macros, so I recommend using the medium setting.  You'll have to enable the macros every time the program loads, but it's far safer.  I can walk you through this if necessary.

The danger with using the web-based calculator is that it is dependant upon the Internet, servers in Atlanta, and the reliability of all to work as designed.  While it is a good tool, the reliability is still questionable.  Attorneys who use this should have the Excel Version available as a backup...and the two are not currently interchangeable.

I strongly recommend attorneys invest some funds into new laptops and "Jump Drives".  I will counsel folks who are nervous about what to buy, but you should have at least the following:  minimum 1.5 ghz processor, 40 gigabyte hard drive, 512 megabytes RAM, built-in wireless internet, Windows XP Professional, and Office 2003.  If you buy a "Jump Drive" get one with at least one gigabyte.  You can carry a lot of information on one (probably a hundred filled out forms) and never have to worry about compatibility.  You can purchase any of this at Office Depot, Circuit City, or even online.  If your office desktop computers contain the USB ports in the back only, you might want to purchase a USB Hub so you can connect from the front of your computer.  If you walk into Office Depot, Circuit City, etc. and tell them what you want, they can direct you what to buy.  Buy name brand computers without too many other programs.

If you're still nervous about buying all this, you can call or email me for advice.  It's free and I have no dog in the fight, so you won't feel pressured or ripped off.
